Prostitution in Iraq is illegal but pleasure marriages are legal. Pleasure marriages are when a man hires a woman to be his wife in exchange for cash. Such an arrangement can last as long as several years or a couple of hours. The Arabic word for pleasure marriage is muta'a. Women are not allowed to enter muta'a but were illegal under the rule of Saddam Hussien but have flourished since he stopped ruling the country. It is practiced in Shi'ite sector.
